Renewal Payment Failed

This document contains all the information related to failed renewal payment notifications, email customization, and activation.

Overview

“Renewal Payment Failed” is the email notification sent automatically when a customer’s subscription renewal payment does not process successfully.

This notification alerts customers about the issue, provides guidance on how to fix their payment method, and helps prevent interruptions to their subscription.

The email includes:

  • Status of the subscription (Inactive until payment is updated)
  • Subscription start date
  • Subscription ID
  • Payment method
  • Product details (title, variation, quantity, and price)
  • Subtotal
  • Shipping
  • Taxes
  • Discounts
  • Total amount due
  • A link to update the card or payment details
  • A link to contact support via admin email

Note: After the first payment fails, you can set automation to retry up to 6 times to recover the recurring payment. For details, see the payment recovery doc.

When It Is Sent

This email is sent when:

  • A renewal order fails due to payment issues
  • The payment gateway declines or cannot process the renewal

Recipient

By default, this email is sent to the customer.

Note: Ensure SMTP is set up on your WordPress site to ensure email notifications are delivered.

How To Activate “Renewal Payment Failed” Email Notification

Navigate to Sublium Subscriptions ⇒ Settings ⇒ Notifications.

Under the Subscriptions tab, you will find the Renewal Payment Failed email notification.

To activate the “Renewal Payment Failed” email, turn ON the toggle next to the notification in your Sublium Subscriptions settings.

Email Customization

You can customize this notification using two editor types:

  • Rich Text
  • Visual Editor

A prebuilt “Renewal Payment Failed” template is available in both editors, and you may customize or rebuild it as needed.

  • {{admin_email}} – Admin email address for support
  • {{card_update_url}} – URL for the subscriber to update their payment details

Testing The Email

To send a test email, click “Preview & Test”, enter the email address(es), and click Send Email.

Note: Test emails display sample (dummy) data for preview purposes. Actual customer and order details will be dynamically populated in real time when the email is sent.
